Hi Snadger. They are doing two bags for a fiver or £3.48 each. All varieties come in 2.5kg bags except the salad varieties which are 1.5kg. Thanks Minty

Hello Minty, looking at your choice of potatoes there. As mainstream choice they look fine - but I don't think I would give ground space to Maris Piper. They are the cheapest potatoes you can buy in the supermarket. They give great big crops with nothing else to recommend them. But I'm with your excitement. Hope your potatoes are great.

From each according to his ability, to each according to his needs.

I have come home from B&Q with:

        Desiree Seed Potatoes
        Nicola Seed Potatoes
3 lots of Red Champagne Rhubarb
        Asparagus
        Ginger
        Horseradish
        Shallots
        Jerusalem Artichokes
Sorry Seahorse, what is the potato choice like at B&Q, are there almost as much as you get from Alan Romans or T&M? I'm glad they have Maris Peer and I'd like International or Royal Kidney and Ratte.

I don't really know what I'm talking about but I thought B&Q had a decent choice of different types for a place that isn't a 'real' garden centre. I think there were about ten varieties but nothing that stood out as unusual. I didn't see any of the ones you mentioned.

I have to confess to also placing quite a substantial order with the lovely Mr Romans for some heritage and harder to find tubers

Couldn`t resist some pink fir apple from Wyvale this morning.
As they are a lot smaller than most other seed potatoes(50 from my 2k bag) do you plant them the same distance apart ??. Also anyone any idea how well these type crop. Thanks Minty X

I don't really know Minty but I've ordered some Pink Fir Apples (along with a few others ) from Alan Romans and there's no mention in his book or on the website about different planting.

Also found Roseval at the Co-Op today (rare in the UK, apparantly?) so I'm going to try a couple of those in tubs.

Nah! Our Co-Op specialises in selling single rashers of bacon and 6 packs of stout to old biddies! They were being sold as eaters but, as I understand it, you can try planting any old stuff as long as it's in pots and not direct in the ground (to avoid any potential contamination problems).

PFA are brilliant Minty but mature quite late so may not be the best if yuo have problems with slugs. Anya are very similar but give more even shaped tubers if you find knobbly odd shaped tubers a problem.

PFA have massive foliage, mine was 5 foot high! so may need staking! I had a good crop when I grew them. Even though they are a late maincrop I planted them at a similar distance to earlies and had on average half a dozen decent sized tubers per plant.

I've grown Roseval in the past Seahorse. A nice spud - I keep finding them growing up as volunteers even though it's about 5 years since they were 'deliberate'. Because of the colour it's far easier to miss them in my soil than a pale potato.
